Pétanque Au Peyrou

Petanque eu Peyrou

Above are contact sheets of a group of people playing Pétanque' at the 'Parc du Peyrou'

For these photos, I was just walking around the park with my camera and saw a group of young adults playing Pétanque at the end of the day when the sun was coming down. I went up to them and asked them if I could take some photos of them playing as this was a very French looking scene.

La Pétanque (lawn bowling) : It is played with hollow steel balls known as 'boules'and a small wooden target ball or 'jack'. The game is usually played on a gravel-topped terrain at least 12m long, but this need not to be a purpose-built area and petanque can be played informally on many other types of surface, such as a sandy beach. The goal in this game is to have your steel balls the closest to the wooden target.

It was really funny to watch them play and once I was done with my pictures they asked if my friend and I wanted to join in for one game, so we did. I really enjoyed that moment with them.

I am considering this photo as one of my 10 finals photos. I think the moment was well captured, as the man in the middle in throwing his steel ball you can see his expressions on his face writing to see if he's going to be the closest. While his opponents are hoping he doesn't! If I select this image I would probably crop the negative space on top of the photo and maybe make it into a square crop.

This photo is a personal preference but I won't use it for my 10 final images. I like the composition with the trees creating an arch above them. They were checking who was the closest to the target.
